KEY PARAMETERS TO BE REVIEWED WHILE BUYING A 3D PRINTER

Material & Resources

Material & Resources

The printer supports the metal materials you have shortlisted to be used for manufacturing, such as titanium, aluminum, and stainless steel. You need to know their availability and pricing.
Build Volume

Product specifications and build volume

The printer you choose should be capable of producing the product according to the preferred size specifications, such as volume, layer thickness, and smooth surface finish.
Precision Finish

Precision and Final Finish

The final product should match your expectations, especially in terms of quality and precision in the finish. You also need to consider the post-production processes required, such as heat treatment or machining.
Process Flow

Production Process

The production process has to be carefully studied and evaluated in terms of Printing speed and output productivity. Compatibility of software considering various CAD software and file formats. Ease of using the printer user interface, experience, and usability.

Best Service

Printer specifications, cost, and after-sales service

Check specifications and safety features. In addition, you discuss, compare, and review product specifications with industry experts, which helps you make the correct decision. The level of support and training offered by the manufacturer or supplier is an equally important aspect before purchasing the machine.
Estimate Costing

Investment vs. Total Cost of Operation (TCO) and Returns (ROI)

Choosing the right 3D printer is essential. It is important to understand the initial investment costs as you need to consider the Total Cost of Operation (TCO) and returns (ROI) before proceeding with the purchase. At times, you need to consider an initial high investment that can lower the cost of operations and deliver higher returns.

Frequently Asked Questions

A metal 3D printer builds fully-dense metal parts layer by layer from a digital CAD file. Depending on the technology DMLS, DED, or BMD it either sinters metal powder with a laser, melts metal wire as it is deposited, or extrudes metal-filled rods for later sintering. All processes produce parts with mechanical properties comparable to conventional metalworking, enabling complex geometries impossible to machine or cast.

The most common materials include stainless steel (316L, 17-4 PH), titanium (Ti6Al4V), aluminium (AlSi10Mg), tool steel (H13, M300, A2, D2), Inconel 625/718, cobalt chrome, copper, and maraging steel. Material availability depends on the process — DMLS supports the broadest range, DED wire uses standard welding wire feedstock (far cheaper than powder), and BMD offers metal-specific rods for stainless, tool steel, and copper. Phillips can advise on the optimal material-process combination for your application.

DMLS (Direct Metal Laser Sintering) and SLM (Selective Laser Melting) are both laser powder-bed fusion processes. DMLS, pioneered by EOS, operates at temperatures below the melting point to achieve sintering, while SLM fully melts the powder. In practice, modern DMLS systems including EOS achieve near-complete melting and densities above 99.5% making the distinction largely academic. The terms are often used interchangeably in industry. More meaningful differentiators are the number of lasers, build volume, inert atmosphere quality, and material parameter libraries offered by each OEM.

Globally, commercial aerospace lead metal AM adoption. In India specifically, the fastest-growing sectors are: automotive (tooling and prototype parts), dental (CoCr crowns and bridges via DMLS), die & mould (conformal cooling inserts in H13), and energy/oil & gas (Inconel components). Medical implants and jewellery are also significant Indian use cases. Phillips has reference installations across all of these sectors and can arrange site visits to relevant customer facilities.
Most metal 3D printed parts require: 1. stress relief heat treatment in an inert atmosphere furnace to remove residual stresses. 2. Support structure removal by machining, grinding, or wire EDM 3. Surface finishing bead blasting to Ra 4–6 µm as standard, or CNC machining/polishing for tighter tolerances. Some structural commercial aerospace applications require Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) to close any residual micro-porosity. BMD parts (Markforged) additionally require a debinding step before sintering. Phillips Application Engineers guide customers through the complete post-processing workflow to achieve certified final part specifications.
