SITUATION
As a global leader in manufacturing, AMETEK, Inc. now relies on Haas machinery to produce its precisely cut radiation detectors from high purity germanium (HPGe) crystal. However, when Lillian Frazier joined the team as Detector Process Engineer in 2018, AMETEK was outsourcing the cutting of its germanium material. To bring production completely in-house, AMETEK acquired a Haas Mini Mill, and Lillian was tasked with heading up the project. As a hands-on leader, she wanted to know as much as possible about the machine she was responsible for. So, when she learned of a week-long Haas maintenance course taught at the Phillips Haas Service Training Center in Knoxville, TN, she signed up for the first available spot.
STRATEGY
To learn about Haas maintenance and repairs, Lillian attended the Haas Service Training course at the Knoxville facility. With over 30 years of industry experience, lead instructor Todd Price guided the class through dedicated, hands-on lessons. Lillian gained firsthand experience troubleshooting and performing repairs on state-of-the-art Haas equipment. She also developed a deep understanding of Haas machine systems and learned how to verify geometry, run diagnostic tests and recover crashed machines.
RESULTS
The skills Lillian learned in the Haas Service Training course allowed her to take AMETEK Inc.’s Haas maintenance in-house – saving time, cutting costs and reducing downtime. She was also able to teach the technicians on her team how to troubleshoot, read error messages and perform basic repairs on their Haas Mini Mill. This has sparked their interest in learning more about the Phillips Haas Service Training Center. Now, Lillian and her team can ensure their machine runs smoothly, avoid common mistakes and quickly troubleshoot problems when they arise to optimize business productivity.
