Powering the Future: The Journey Behind Our JSW Energy Skill Academy

Picture yourself standing in a wide-open field, surrounded by towering wind turbines, each one silently spinning, transforming gusts of wind into clean energy. But before these turbines come to life, a story unfolds a journey that begins with research, collaboration, and hands-on training to shape future renewable energy professionals.

This is how we designed a comprehensive Wind Turbine Installation Course to meet the industry’s growing needs.

Building the Blueprint: Insights from the Field

Aligning industry needs with quality education and setting up a JSW Energy Skill Academy Powered by Phillips Education

With the wind energy sector advancing rapidly, we knew that creating well-trained technicians would require more than instruction manuals. We needed to provide a balanced mix of theory, hands-on learning, and problem-solving skills to meet real-world challenges.

It all began with a small team of experts from Phillips Education visiting a wind farm in Tuticorin to conduct a need analysis. This visit revealed a critical gap: a shortage of skilled professionals for turbine installation. With this insight in mind, we got to work developing a curriculum that would bridge this gap.

Crafting the Curriculum: Five Modules, Endless Potential

Drawing from extensive field research, the learning team at Phillips Education developed a comprehensive syllabus tailored to industry requirements. The curriculum was subsequently reviewed and validated by industry experts from a leading energy company. After multiple feedback iterations and refinements, a robust, industry-aligned program was finalized, structured into five core modules:

Module 01: Basic Mechanical and Civil Work in Wind Turbine Installation

Module 02: Basic Electrical Work in Wind Turbine Installation

Module 03: Basic Hydraulics in Wind Turbine Installation

Module 04: Basic Safety Protocols for Wind Turbine Installation

Module 05: Written, Verbal, and Behavioral Skills for Professional Success

A Collaborative Effort: Trainers and Experts Join Forces

It’s often said that it takes a village to accomplish something meaningful. The same applies here this course is the result of multiple trainers, engineers, instructional designers, and subject matter experts working together. Each expert brought unique insights, ensuring the curriculum was comprehensive and relevant.

Designing for the Future: Textbooks with Impact

With the structure in place, instructional designers transformed the raw content into a visually appealing, informative textbook. Each book was aligned with the latest developments in wind energy, covering industry standards, safety regulations, and sustainable practices.

The ask was clear: not to aim to teach the basics but to help students grasp the future of wind technology. With turbines becoming more sophisticated, installation demands precision engineering and a heightened focus on safety. This emphasis on current trends ensures that our students are prepared for the challenges of today and tomorrow.

Training Decks and Lesson Plan: Facilitating Training

We also created a comprehensive lesson plan for the two-month course and training decks to facilitate the training sessions.

GWO Certification: Raising the Bar

Our curriculum adheres to Global Wind Organisation (GWO) standards, ensuring that students are equipped with industry-relevant skills. GWO’s learning objectives, updated through its international committees, guide renewable energy professionals working in installation, operations, and maintenance. These standards were embedded in every aspect of our course material.

Collaboration and Research: Powering Innovation

Creating a course of this caliber required close collaboration with engineers, environmental scientists, and industry experts. We conducted field research, analyzed government policies, and reviewed academic papers on renewable energy to ensure the content was aligned with industry standards.

As part of our research efforts, experts from Phillips Education visited a wind installation site in Sandur, Karnataka. This time, we brought along a team of videographers to document the entire installation process. The footage was carefully edited into a training film, giving students a visual walkthrough of real-world operations. This resource will be a valuable reference, helping them better understand key procedures during their on-the-job training (OJT).
This combination of perspectives and practical insights ensures that our course closely mirrors the realities of the field, equipping students with the knowledge they need to excel in their careers.

Theory Meets Practice: Real-World Learning

Our philosophy is that learning is most effective when theory meets practice. To achieve this, we included several immersive elements in the course:

Virtual Reality (VR)- based assessments, where students could virtually climb up the wind turbine to check if they were comfortable with heights. They also went through a climb test to check if they were suited to working with heights.

Leveraging Phillips Machinist App

We also leveraged our Machinist app to enroll the learners in the class where they can check-in every day, interact with their peers and mentors, attempt formative assessments, and read about emerging technologies in the industry.

Case studies of successful wind turbine installations.
Hands-on workshops, allowing students to assemble and work with turbine components.
VR headsets were a game-changer, as students could explore the inner workings of turbines without leaving the classroom. This immersive experience helped them master complex concepts while boosting their engagement.

Day One: Setting the Stage for Success

The first day of training was filled with energy and excitement. Students arrived eager to begin their journey into the world of wind energy. The day kicked off with:

• Orientation session to introduce them to the course structure and expectations.

• Baseline assessments to measure their initial knowledge.

• On-site medical checks, ensuring that all students met the necessary health and safety requirements.

Empowering Tomorrow’s Professionals

This course isn’t just about teaching turbine installation—it’s about empowering future leaders in renewable energy. By the end of the program, students will have:

• In-depth knowledge of wind energy technologies.

• Hands-on experience working with turbine components and tools.

• Problem-solving skills for on-site troubleshooting.

The Winds of Change Are Here

Wind energy is a key driver in the shift toward a greener, more sustainable future. As the world moves toward meeting global energy targets, wind turbines will play an essential role in reducing our carbon footprint.

This course represents months of hard work, research, and teamwork—but the real reward will be to see our students flourish and become a part of the global clean energy movement.

(Fun fact: By 2030, wind turbines are expected to generate 20% of the world’s electricity!)
