SLA 3D Printer - FAQ: Common Questions Answered

SLA (Stereolithography) 3D printers use a precise UV laser to cure liquid photopolymer resin layer by layer, producing parts with extremely high resolution (25μm), smooth surface finish, and tight dimensional accuracy (±0.1mm). They are ideal for precision prototyping, dental models, jewelry casting, and end-use engineering parts.

SLA delivers significantly better surface finish (Ra 1.6μm vs visible layer lines), higher dimensional accuracy (±0.1mm vs ±0.3–0.5mm), and finer feature detail than FDM. FDM is more cost-effective for large, low-detail parts. SLA is preferred wherever surface quality, accuracy, or biocompatibility matters dental, medical, commercial aerospace, jewelry, and precision engineering.

Yes. Phillips Additive has an extensive service network with technical centers in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, Coimbatore, and more. Our application engineers provide installation, operator training, preventive maintenance, and on-site support with a 4-hour response SLA for critical issues.

Yes. Modern SLA printers from Formlabs support engineering resins (Tough 2000, Rigid 10K), high-temperature resins (238°C HDT), and biocompatible resins that meet ISO and FDA standards. These enable production of functional end-use parts for mechanical assemblies, commercial aerospace jigs, medical device components, and dental prosthetics.

Print time depends on part height and geometry. The Formlabs Form 4 prints at up to 100mm/hour, making most desktop-sized parts printable in 2–8 hours. Post-processing (wash + cure) adds 30–45 minutes. Complex multi-part batches on large-format printers like the Form 4L can be completed overnight, enabling next-day delivery for most prototypes.
