Phillips Corporation, Federal Division Proudly Supports U.S. Coast Guard Milestone in Metal Additive Manufacturing

Hanover, MD – January 2025 – Phillips Corporation, Federal Division, a key strategic partner at the U.S. Navy’s Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (AM CoE) in Danville, Virginia, celebrates its role in supporting the successful production and qualification of the U.S. Coast Guard’s first critical metal 3D-printed component installed on a cutter.

Through our expertise in managing part digitization, additive manufacturing processes, and operation of advanced laser powder bed fusion systems—including the EOS M400 platform—at the Navy AM CoE, Phillips Federal played an integral part in producing the innovative seal housing covers for the fin stabilization system on the USCGC Forward. This collaboration with the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard enabled the rapid development and printing of eight large-scale 316 stainless steel parts, marking a significant advancement in addressing supply chain challenges for legacy components.

The 3D-printed seal housings, installed earlier this year during an emergency dry dock, represent the first metal additive-manufactured part categorized as “critical” by Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) on any military surface asset. By upgrading the material from 304 to corrosion-resistant 316 stainless steel and leveraging near-net-shape production, this project not only recreates a discontinued supply chain but also demonstrates potential for long-term cost savings and reduced maintenance cycles.
