CAMP PENDLETON, Calif.During the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force (I MEF) Field Exercise at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Phillips Federal and EOS demonstrated how advanced additive manufacturing is transforming military sustainment in austere environments. By deploying both metal and polymer Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) systems, the partnership enabled on-site, on-demand production of mission-critical components—dramatically reducing downtime and strengthening operational readiness.

Supply chain delays remain one of the military’s most persistent challenges. Traditional procurement timelines, which can span weeks, months, or even years, often compromise combat effectiveness. To counter this vulnerability, Phillips Federal, in partnership with EOS, deployed the EOS M 290 metal system (316L Stainless Steel) and the EOS P 396 polymer system (Nylon 12) directly to the exercise. This allowed Marines to manufacture replacement parts at the point of need.

Key Results:

  • More than 400 anti-reflective “killflash” devices for weapon optics were produced in just two days using the EOS P 396. These components reduce lens glint, protect optics, and preserve tactical concealment. Previously, a single killflash could take up to 40 hours to manufacture with replacement lead times nearing 59 daysThe on-site effort saved the Marine Corps more than $28,000. 

Additional polymer components produced by the EOS P 396 included: 

  • 34 antenna subassemblies for radio sets and artillery fire control systems in 12 hours (versus 184 days) 
  • 5 generator handles in 10 hours (versus 17 days) at approximately $3 per part 
  • 5 replacement handles for 7-ton trucks in 9 hours (versus 19 days) 

The EOS M 290 metal system delivered high-strength, production-grade parts: 

  • 36 M4 swivel mounts in 10 hours (versus 68 days) 
  • 2 TPS-80 G/ATOR radar carrier plates in under 24 hours (versus 27 months) 
  • 3 PAWL compression latch camshafts in 10 hours (versus 27 months) 

By integrating LPBF technology at the battalion level, Phillips Federal and EOS demonstrated a powerful new model for expeditionary logistics: one that slashes lead times, lowers costs, and sustains lethality.
